23-year-old Arsenal midfielder get call up to England squad after soaring in Liverpool game

Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Wolves defender Conor Coady have been added to the England squad for next month’s Uefa Nations League matches.

Maitland-Niles’s first senior call-up comes on his 23rd birthday and little over an hour after he was named man-of-the-match in the Gunners’ Community Shield win over Liverpool

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate named a 24-man squad for the upcoming Nations League double-header with Denmark and Iceland on Tuesday, only for Harry Maguire to be pulled from the group later in the day.

The versatile midfielder, who was part of England’s U20 World Cup winning side in 2017, has regularly filled in at full back on both sides of the pitch under Mikel Arteta. Gareth Southgate did not name a left-back in his initial 24-man squad.

Coady is also receiving his first call-up after excelling for Wolves over the past two seasons.

Southgate’s squad had lost a centre-back when Harry Maguire was dropped after being found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery by a Greek court, following an incident on the holiday island of Mykonos.

England are due to face Iceland in Reykjavik in their opening game of the new Nations League campaign on September 5, before meeting Denmark in Copenhagen on September 8.
