It is no secret that the Blues are desperate to add a new striker to their ranks this summer, with Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland their top target, while Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Adama Traore and Declan Rice of West Ham United also remain on the club’s radar.
However, another name has now come to light in regards to Chelsea’s thinking ahead of the start of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign in the form of Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Marquinhos.
According to a report by the Mirror, Chelsea are interested in signing the 27-year-old and seeing him reunited with head coach Thomas Tuchel, who, of course, spent two years in charge in the French capital and coached the centre-back, meaning he knows all there is to know about the Brazilian.
It is claimed that Tuchel really likes the centre-back and his qualities, meaning he could become an option to strengthen their defensive line this summer.
Although Tuchel successfully transformed Chelsea’s defence following his arrival in January, with the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva and Andreas Christensen all proving to be excellent, all four of them, as things stand, are out-of-contract next summer, meaning the German cannot run the risk of all of them entering the latter stages of their current deals and not having not put pen to paper on a new contract.
Thus, landing a new centre-back, although it is not a top, top priority for Chelsea this summer, may be something that needs to be considered.
In Marquinhos, the Blues would be inheriting a central-defender at a good age, vastly experienced and knows what Tuchel would expect from him, as well as Tuchel knowing what he would get from him.
The fee that Chelsea would have to pay to sign him has not been revealed, but Marquinhos could be an excellent fit in west London for a variety of reasons.
